Dr. Joel R. Saper
Founder and Director, Michigan Head Pain & Neurological Institute
Dr. Joel R. Saper is the Founder and Director of the renowned Michigan Head•Pain & Neurological Institute in Ann Arbor, Michigan, now in its 33rd year of operation. The Institute, which was founded by Dr. Saper after he left his faculty position at the University of Michigan, Department of Neurology, has become an international referral center, attracting to Michigan annually thousands of patients from around the world for treatment. Dr. Saper is a Clinical Professor of Neurology (MSU) and recognized as an international authority on head pain and other painful disorders. He received his neurology training at the University of Michigan and was on the faculty for several years prior to creating the Institute. Dr. Saper is board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (in neurology), by the American Board of Pain Medicine (in pain medicine), and by the United Council for Neurological Subspecialties (in headache medicine).
Dr. Saper is a former president of the American Headache Society, National Chair of the American Council for Headache Education, former Chair of the Michigan Council on Pain, and a medical consultant for ABC News and frequently appearing as a guest in national TV and print media, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal, among many others. Dr. Saper is the past Chair of the Pain Care Coalition, a national legislative advocacy group for the major professional pain societies in the United States, including the American Headache Society, the American Society of Anesthesia, and the American Academy of Pain Medicine. Dr. Saper is a past chair of the Headache Section of the American Academy of Neurology.
Dr. Saper is the author of 7 medical books and over 300 medical articles in peer-reviewed journals. He, together with Congressman Mike Rogers (Brighton), wrote the National Pain Care Policy Act, which was recently signed into federal law, and which became the basis for the Military Pain Act and Veterans Pain Act, which emphasize the consequences of head injury.
Dr. Saper has received several awards during his career, including the Student Clinical Award at the University of Illinois College of Medicine for clinical achievements as a medical student; the John R. Graham Senior Clinical Award by the American Headache Society; the Phil Lippe Distinguished Service Award by the American Academy of Pain Medicine for distinguished clinical service to pain medicine; and the Senior Educator Award by the American Council for Headache Education. Dr. Saper has been cited annually for over a decade in The Best Doctors in America and America’s Top Doctors. Recently Dr. Saper was cited by Women’s Health Magazine as one of America’s top doctors for women. He resides in northeast Ann Arbor.

Phillip Weaver
President and CEO, Hope Network
In 2006 Phil Weaver was named President and CEO of Hope Network, a $125 million non-profit based in Grand Rapids with 2500 employees that serve more than 78 counties in Michigan. Hope Network has locations across the entire state and is recognized as the premier provider of Specialty Health and Community Services to individuals with disabilities and disadvantages. Hope Network served more than 23,000 people last year alone, and also runs the largest non-profit transportation system in Michigan.
Prior to joining Hope Network, Phil was President and CEO of Goodwill of Greater Grand Rapids. During his 22 years in the public and private sectors, Phil held several positions in Human Resources, Organizational Development/Strategy, and Executive Operations Management with Stryker Corporation, Ford Motor Company, Triple S Plastics and Eimo Americas. Phil believes that an organization’s leader needs to bring a passion and commitment for its mission and values, and is responsible for communicating that mission to the community and other stakeholders. Phil also taught and coached for several years in public schools.
Phil holds a degree in Education from Northern Michigan University in Marquette and a Masters degree from Michigan State University.
Phil has been married for 28 years to his wife Mary Ann, and has three sons. He currently resides in Caledonia, Michigan.
